Spartans make it 7 in a row
The Superior High School boys hockey team extended its win streak to seven games with a 3-2 win over Duluth Denfeld Thursday evening at the Heritage Center.
The Spartans got goals from Luke Drougas, Cayden Laurvick and Taylor Burger to improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.
Caden Welch was the winning goaltender with 17 saves. Shawn Easty made 33 saves for the Hunters.
Superior scored a goal in each period starting with Drougas’ goal 8:52 into the game. Welch picked up his second assist of the season on the tally.
Laurvick put the finishing touches on a perfect give-and-go with Burger for a 2-0 game at 4:31 of the second period.
Laurvick returned the favor 3:59 into the third period when Burger pounded home the rebound after his shots by Laurvick and Trevor Dalbec.
Nineteen seconds later Denfeld’s Griffin Lehet scored on a penalty shot and then the Hunters made it a 3-2 game when Payton Budisalovich redirected a shot by Jacob Eskola past Welch.
The Spartans called a timeout with 5:33 remaining and eventually kept Denfeld from any scoring chances, including when an icing call led to a face off in front of Welch with 6.4 seconds remaining.
Up next for Superior is the Showdown in Title Town Wednesday through Friday at the Cornerstone Community Center in Ashwaubenon.
The Spartans will play the West Salem Panthers for the first time ever at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The Panthers are 6-2 overall with their wins over Mosinee, Viroqua, Tomah, La Crescent, Black River Falls and Baldwin-Woodville. Their losses are to Onalaska and La Crosse Logan/Central.
SPARTAN SPIN: The “Bug” is still a problem for Superior. After playing without seven players in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Proctor, five players were still out Thursday. Returning to action were Max Plunkett and Welch. … Superior had four minor penalties and Denfeld had two.
