Northwestern hoop teams notch victories
The Northwestern High School girls basketball team survived a hot-shooting Ladysmith team with a 64-56 win Friday night in Ladysmith.
The Lumberjills, starting two sophomores and two freshmen, made 12 3-point shots during the game, but Northwestern was able to stave them off with a tall front line and a hot shooter of their own — Katie Lundeen, who scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
“Give Ladysmith credit, they shot the lights out and gave us a real tough game,” NHS coach Richard Windt said. “Our girls kept with the program and survived. This was a good win for us.”
The game began with Ladysmith making threes and commanding a small lead that was 19-16 midway through the first half.
A 12-0 Tiger run, sparked by seniors Lundeen and Sydney Anderson, gave the Tigers a nine-point lead, but it melted away somewhat, however, and the half ended with Northwestern leading 32-27.
The second half saw the Tigers clinging to the small lead, and eventually losing the lead with 7:06 to go when Emma Dieckman made two free throws for a 48-47 score.
Mac Correll answered with a 3-pointer and the Tigers never relinquished the lead.
Freshman Sierra Beres led Ladysmith (4-7 overall, 3-3 Heart O’ North Conference) with 19 points and sophomore Dieckman had 18.
Correll hit her last four shots from behind the 3-point line and ended with 17 points. Kasha Hughlett was next with 10 points and seven rebounds; Sydney Anderson scored six points; Karsyn Jones had four; Samantha Hoegen three; and Kennedy Nelson one. Nelson also dished out five assists.
The Tigers (8-3, 5-2) hosts Rice Lake tonight and play at Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Thursday. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m.
Northwestern wraps up the week with a non-conference game Saturday at St. Croix Central.
Bloomer defeated Northwestern 66-53 Thursday in Maple.
Bloomer (8-0, 5-0 HON) was led by Payton Dachel’s 32 points. Mason Miller added 14 points, including four 3-pointers.
NHS (3-2, 5-5) is at Cumberland at 7:15 p.m. today.
