UWS ROUND-UP: Kontny honored, nears 1,000 points

Four University of Wisconsin-Superior athletes earned weekly honors from the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

Hailey Kontny was named the UMAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The former Superior Spartan led the Yellowjackets to two UMAC wins on the week, recording a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double vs. St. Scholastica, and scoring 25 of her 31 points in the second-half of a win over Minnesota Morris.

Jordan Koski is the UMAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

Koski, a senior from Park Falls, ran a UMAC-leading (personal record) 5,000-meter time of 15:37.43 in The Opener hosted by the College of St. Scholastica; finished as the top Division III runner in the field and fifth overall; and his converted time of 15:27.5 ranks 26th in Division III.

Fauston Wirtz is the UMAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.

The junior from Esko won the weight throw at the CSS Opener with a throw of 15.06 meters (49-5), which ranks 18th in Division III top 50, and leads the UMAC in shot put with throw of 11.56 meters (37-11.25).

Taylor Phillips is the UMAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.

The junior from Superior, had two top finishes among DIII schools at The Opener; and led the field, and ranked 18th in Division III, with a weight throw mark of 15.06 meters, and then led the UMAC with a shot put throw of 11.56 meters.

Women’s hoops

Kontny is closing on the 1,000-point mark for her Yellowjacket career.

The former Superior Spartan has scored 924 points in two-plus seasons with the Yellowjackets, putting her just 76 points away from the career milestone.

Kontny, who scored seven points in in Wednesday’s 63-24 win at Northland College in Ashland, is ranked 15th all-time in scoring in Yellowjacket women’s basketball history.

Jade Tucker led the way Wednesday night with 12 points as UWS jumped to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the victory.

Fourteen players scored in a balanced effort for UWS (7-2 overall, 3-0 UMAC), with Hannah Norlin adding nine points.

The Yellowjackets outrebounded the Lumberjills 40-29 in improving to 35-0 in conference play since joining the UMAC in 2015.

Ashton Meadows had six points and four rebounds off the bench to lead Northland (1-8, 0-2), which couldn’t overcome 28 turnovers and 19.5 percent shooting.

UWS hosts Martin Luther at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s hoops

Brandon Galland scored 20 points and Northland College used a big second half to down UWS 79-73 in UMAC action Wednesday night in Ashland.

Harrison Lucas added 18 points and Thomas Whiting and Matt Zorn chipped in 12 points apiece as the Lumberjacks (3-5 overall, 1-1 UMAC) had four players reach double figures in scoring.

Scott Montroy had 22 points and Shaq Coleman of Duluth added 19 points for the Yellowjackets (2-8, 0-3), who shot 65.4 percent in the first half in building a 42-37 lead before Northland outscored them 42-31 the rest of the way.

UWS hosts Martin Luther at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Superior Showdown 

The UWS men’s hockey program will host its inaugural Superior Showdown tournament Dec. 29-30.

This year’s field will feature Concordia College, Marian University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. 

Tournament pass rates are $20 for adults; $12 for seniors and non-UWS students; and UWS students and children 5 and under are free.

Women’s hockey

The Yellowjackets will wrap up their final games before Christmas by hosting Finlandia at 7 p.m. tonight and 2 p.m. Saturday.
