TIGER ROUND-UP: Baseball team sweeps Spooner
The Northwestern High School baseball team improved to 4-0 in the Heart O’ North Conference with wins of 11-6 and 5-4 Thursday at Spooner.
Gabe Beeksma was the winning pitcher in the opener in relief of Anthony Lupa.
The Tigers had 18 hits in the opener with Justin Sedin and Carson Holsclaw accounted for half of them as Sedin was 5-for-5 an Holsclaw was 4-for-4, including two doubles.
Jake Brill had two doubles and a single; Lupa doubled and singled; and Isaiah Hurray, David Wakefield, Dayne Evanson and Gabe Beeksma had a hit apiece.
Sedin was the winner in game two in relief of Brill.
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull out a win before the game was called because of darkness.
Evanson, who was making his varsity debut along with Hurray, was 3-for-3 with two doubles in game two. Combined, the two reached base everytime they entered the batter’s box in the doubleheader (9-for-9).
Holsclaw and Brill both singled twice in the second game, while Lupa and Dylan Ronchi both singled once.
The Tigers host Hayward at 4:30 p.m. today and will be play a doubleheader at Chetek at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“We’ll have our hands full with Hayward, they’ve been playing great baseball this year,” NHS coach Jovin Kroll said. “We’ll have to throw more strikes and catch the ball a little better if we want to continue our little run we’re on in the conference.”
The Tigers went 1-2 in the 33nd annual Poynette Jamboree this weekend.
Northwestern lost to Columbus Catholic 2-1 and Random Lake 11-5 before rebounding with a 7-0 win over Fox Valley Lutheran.
The Tigers play at Hayward today and Barron Thursday. Both games begin at 5 p.m.
