Spartan boys go 1-1 in one-run contests
The Superior High School baseball team played a pair of exciting one-run games late last week.
The Spartans defeated Duluth Marshall in walk-off fashion 2-1 on Thursday, but then ended up on the wrong side of a 1-0 pitchers duel with the Menomonie Mustangs on Saturday.
Both games were played at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
The Spartans (9-3) play at Proctor at 4:30 p.m. today. The Rails are currently undefeated in the Lake Superior Conference.
Superior wraps up the week with a doubleheader at Eau Claire Memorial at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Menomonie 1, SHS 0
The game’s only run came in the top of the first inning when Briggs Richartz reached on a two-out error and scored on Brett Lecheler’s first-pitch double.
Jace Kressin was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits with 17 strikeouts and two walks.
For the Spartans, Mason Moen and Drake Samarzia combined to scatter five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Ben Rhodes doubled and Moen singled for Superior.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV defeated Menomonie 7-3. Austin LeJeune started for the Spartans and pitched four innings allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit while walking five and striking out five. Joe Barker and Jake Edwards pitched in relief, allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out four. Barker led the way at the plate with a double and single, while Riley Rehnstrand, Max Reed, Kaden Kimmes and Carter Fonger each had singles.

Conner Fonger scored on Will Schorr’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning in Superior’s win over Marshall.
Brandon Wing picked up the win in relief for Superior, allowing just one hit over four scoreless innings. Derek Fender pitched the first three innings, allowing one run and four hits while walking three and striking out one.
Marshall scored its run in the top of the first inning when Maddux Baggs singled and scored on Derrick Winn’s double.
Superior tied it up in the bottom of the third when Ben Rhode’s two-out single scored Judd Erickson, who also singled.
Superior’s winning rally started with Fonger walking with one out. He moved to second on a balk and then to third on a wild pitch. Rhodes and Isaac Rios were intentionally walked to load the bases, which set up Schorr’s walk-off single.
Marshall’s Brett Benson went the first six innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five while yielding one run.
The Spartans finished with nine hits. Moen doubled and singled; Rhodes singled twice; and Fonger, Schorr, Derek Fender, Dom D’Auria and Erickson all singled once.
Winn also singled for the Hilltoppers, as did Carter Sullivan and Alex Busick.
SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV defeated Marshall 3-2. Sean McCoshen started for the Spartans and pitched three scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Jason Samarziya also pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win. He allowed one walk while striking out three. Jonathan Rhodes pitched one scoreless inning for the save. The Spartans got hits from Carter Fonger, Riley Rehnstrand and Wyatt Johnson.
